In a recent interview with Washington-based journalist Amancio Miguel, from Voice of America, Fantcha spoke about her new album and her friendship with Cesaria Evora. The pair sat down while he was in New York City, Fantcha’s home from home, for the Annual Security Council of the United Nations. By all accounts, the interview was a relaxed and pleasant sit down in a corner of Soho. First asking her about Nos Caminhada, the album released in late 2016, Fantcha explained her feelings about its meaning.
“The album has a double meaning to me, both personally and artistically. I wrote the song as a tribute to Cesaria Evora (or Patty, as I used to call her). It is a retrospective of what our friendship was – comradery and companionship throughout the bohemian nights in Mindelo, Sao Vicente in the eighties, way before her surge to fame. I also wanted to share her story with the new generation of Cabo Verdeans who did not have the chance to get to know her, so hopefully, they’ll be proud to carry on her legacy.”
Fantcha was delighted to explain that the album is available for everyone digitally and there has been a physical release in Cape Verde. With concerts and performances lined up in Europe, the USA and Africa, she is working hard with both RAJ’d and her manager to make this Autumn a season full of live shows.
