A traditional festival in Cabo Verde, Baía das Gatas takes place in August on the three days of the full moon weekend in August. Filling São Vicente with sound, the celebration stretches back to 1984, and the beloved festival has grown year on year. Many artists now travel from all over the world to make their mark on such a cultural institution, and this year Raj’d’s very own Fantcha took to the stage.
Returning to her roots, Fantcha, who was born in Mindelo, São Vicente, brought her own unique and soulful sounds to the festival, performing on the first day of celebrations. Opening with Vasco Martins, and featuring artists such as Lura and Jacqueline Fortes, this year proved another great celebration of culture and sounds. With thousands of festival goers descending on the small village, the event proved an exciting opportunity for Fantcha, who signed with RAJ’d in 2015.
Fantcha is set to release her album this December to commemorate the much beloved Cabo Verdean singer Cesária Évora, who was not only a mentor to Fantcha, but also a dear friend and one of the country’s greatest exports.
Remarking on the great experience, Fantcha commented, “The show was amazing. I had an opportunity to talk about the release of the album in December on stage, which everyone was excited about, and I got a complement from the President of Cabo Verde.”
